Students often pick commerce and then discover nobody has explained where it leads. The stream supports several very different careers, and the right choice depends on how you like to work, not on which option sounds most impressive.
Professional qualifications
Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary and Cost & Management Accountancy are long, exam-heavy routes with strong professional standing. They suit students who can sustain multi-year discipline and who genuinely enjoy technical detail.
Degree routes
- B.Com — the broad base; flexible, and a common entry to professional exams and MBA.
- BBA — management-oriented, useful before an MBA or a corporate role.
- BBA/B.Com with specialisations in finance, analytics or international business.
Postgraduate and corporate paths
An MBA can shift you into management, marketing, finance or operations roles. Increasingly, commerce graduates also move into financial analysis, taxation practice, banking and data-driven business roles where accounting literacy is a real advantage.
Choosing sensibly
Ask which activity you can tolerate on a bad day — detailed reconciliation work, client conversations, or analysis and presentation. Careers are chosen well when they match temperament, not just salary expectations.
