Students usually meet GST as a pile of definitions. Seen as a flow of value from supplier to customer, the same syllabus becomes logical.
The core idea
GST is charged at every stage of supply, but each business claims credit for the tax it already paid on its inputs. The result is that tax is effectively borne only on the value that business added.
CGST, SGST and IGST
Within a state, the tax splits into a central and a state share. Across states, a single integrated tax applies instead. This is why place of supply matters so much.
Input tax credit conditions
- You must hold a valid tax invoice.
- The goods or services must actually be received.
- The supplier's tax must have reached the government.
- Your own return must be filed.
Why students find it hard
Because it is taught backwards — rules first, logic later. Learn the chain, then the sections describe things you already understand.
